A Veterinary specialist is a qualified veterinarian who has undergone additional post graduate training in their field of specialisation under guidelines laid down by the European, American or Australian specialty colleges.
Training consists of at least three years of supervised clinical work in addition to publication of research in a peer reviewed scientific journal, evaluation of the candidate's academic credentials and finally a series of examinations.
Veterinary specialists, like medical specialists, ususally work only in their field of specialisation. They do not typically conduct vaccinations, routine check ups or other services provided by your primary care (GP) veterinarian.
